Reading, Writing & Math School Assemblies

Reading, writing and math are the skills students practice every single day, which is exactly why a live assembly can make such a difference. When a story gets drawn in front of them, or a math puzzle turns into a race against the clock, kids see these subjects as something fun to explore instead of another worksheet. Our reading, writing and math school assemblies are built to give teachers that spark and to send students back to class wanting more.

Every program below is booked through Academic Entertainment, with one point of contact from your first question to show day. Several are also available as virtual assemblies.

Reading and storytelling assemblies

Adventures in Reading is a full celebration of books, stories and imagination. It is fast-paced and packed with comedy and audience participation, and it keeps reading and language arts at the center of the show rather than as a side mention.

Magic of Reading with Brian Richards uses magic, comedy and storytelling to highlight the fun of reading and encourage kids to explore the library. It is a great way to launch a reading program or a schoolwide reading goal.

Once Upon a Toon pairs storytelling with live cartoon illustration. Multi-Emmy Award-winning cartoonist Joe Wos draws each story as he tells it, so students watch something like a picture book come to life. It is a natural fit for writing units, because kids see how characters, plot and pictures work together.

Math assemblies that get kids moving

Mathical Mystery Tour blends puzzles, stunts, games and magic tricks, with a dozen students joining the action on stage. It turns math into something kids can see and cheer for.

Math Magical is Brian Richards' elementary math show. It touches on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, probability and more, and it can be tailored to your grade levels.

Math & Music Fusion is a musical game show led by composer and educator George Maurer. Beats become clues and numbers become challenges, with a DJ deck and even a theremin on stage. It works well for upper elementary and middle school students who like a little competition.

When schools book them

  • March reading celebrations. Read Across America and spring reading challenges are popular times for a reading assembly.
  • Pi Day (March 14) and math weeks. A math assembly makes a great centerpiece for a math-themed day.
  • Family literacy or math nights. Several of these shows work for mixed audiences of students and parents.
  • After state testing. A fun, learning-focused show is a welcome reward that still keeps academics in the spotlight.
  • Back-to-school. Start the year by showing students that reading and math can be exciting.

Choosing the right show for your grades

For Pre-K through 2nd grade, look for shows with lots of participation and visual storytelling, such as Magic of Reading, Adventures in Reading or Mathical Mystery Tour. For grades 3–6, Math Magical and Once Upon a Toon add more skill-based content. For middle school, Math & Music Fusion and Once Upon a Toon hold older students' attention. You will also find Uncle Sam's Comedy Jam in this collection, a patriotic show for Pre-K–6 that teaches the Bill of Rights and the Constitution through comedy, which makes it a good pick for social studies.
