A game show. A DJ deck. A theremin. And a room full of kids. Where’s the math? Everywhere. Welcome to Math & Music Fusion, where composer, educator, and multimedia performer George Maurer turns an ordinary school assembly into a musical game show where beats become clues, numbers become challenges, and the students become the stars. They’ll listen, guess, count, clap, predict, compete—and make some noise as they race to crack musical patterns, find the beat, and solve each new challenge. George turns math into a high-energy musical adventure where students discover the numbers hiding inside beats, patterns, fractions, tempo, pitch, and sound.
About George Maurer George Maurer has spent more than 35 years figuring out how to make audiences listen, laugh, participate—and hear things differently. A composer, producer, director, performer, and two-time McKnight Composer Fellowship recipient, George has worked across an unusually wide musical world. His arrangements have been performed by the Boston Pops and National Symphony Orchestra, and he spent several years touring the country as orchestral arranger for The Midtown Men, featuring the original Grammy and Tony Award-winning stars of Broadway’s Jersey Boys. But in Math & Music Fusion, the stars of the show are the students. George combines the instincts of a musician with the energy of a game-show host, using familiar music, challenges, technology, humor, and live demonstrations to turn mathematical ideas into things students can actually hear, see, predict—and play with. Math & Music Fusion In-Person Setup
It is CRITICAL to provide a parking space for loading/unloading and ensure your show begins on time!
Audience: K-8 Capacity: 400 Presentation Time: 45 minutes Prefer split younger/older but not required
Set-Up Time: 15 minutes Take-Down Time: 5 to 10 minutes Presentation Area: Performance space can be stage or floor-level. If performance space is floor level, please seat students on the floor with an aisle up the middle of the audience, and not in chairs. If the performance area is a stage, please ensure there are stairs for easy-volunteer access to the performance area. Arrival: No assistance for set-up or take-down of this program is required. Assembly Requirements: Please provide an extension cord and access to an electrical outlet. Presenter will also need either a projector or a smart-board (with HDMI connection for a Mac computer). Presenter provides his own sound. If two or more presentations are scheduled, please divide students by grade level for each presentation – K-3, 4-6, etc. Additional needs:
Math & Music Fusion: In Tune With Mathematics
Your students get a backstage pass to the musical side of math in this upbeat, hands-on program led by musician, composer and edutainer extraordinaire George Maurer. George has shared the stage with Grammy winners like Bruno Mars and Jason Mraz, and he turns on that star power to show K-5 audiences that math really can rock. With a soundtrack that features smash hits like Bruno’s “You Can Count on Me” and Pharrell Williams’s “Happy”, George pulls back the curtain on the addition, subtraction, fractions and patterns behind rhythm, pitch and scales and then lets students create their own music using elementary equations and home-made instruments — including the mysterious, mesmerizing theremin. Please anticipate meeting presenter in the Zoom meeting 15-minutes prior to your start time so they may enable you/school representative as a co-host and accommodate any last-minute details/instructions.
We had the Math & Music Fusion program come to our library for our summer program as part of a math-related grant we received. Our patrons really enjoyed the unique show, and the kids were especially excited to play with the theremin at the end. I thought the topic was also presented very well. The presenter, jazz educator George Maurer, broke down the concepts into relatable experiences and examples for both kids and adults, so it was easy to engage with the content and have fun (while secretly learning)! There were games and movements to keep participants active throughout the program, and at the end, there were a number of patrons who mentioned wanting to attend this program again or another one like it. I recommend it!
