As the weather warms, children will be dusting off their bicycles and riding around their neighborhoods and communities. Riding a bike can be a lot of fun, but it’s important to ALWAYS ride SAFELY. Keep reading for some Bicycle Riding Safety Tips from our resident adventure cyclist, George Maurer.

George’s Virtual Assembly, Tales From A Bicycle Seat, covers some of these bicycle safety tips:

RULE NUMBER 1: Wear something BRIGHT so you can be seen by others – being seen is being safe.

RULE NUMBER 2: ALWAYS wear a helmet, because it protects your head if you crash, and ALL good riders wear a helmet.

RULE NUMBER 3: Ride with an adult, such as your parent, or an older sibling. OR tell an adult where you are going and when you plan on returning.

RULE NUMBER 4: If you’re going to ride on the road, ride on the right side of the road, in the same direction other cars are headed. OR à

RULE NUMBER 5: You may ride OFF-ROAD: such as in a park or on A TRAIL, where there aren’t any cars.

RULE NUMBER 6: If you’re riding on a trail or sidewalk, watch out for any people walking along the way. If you need to pass someone, let them know before you do it, by ringing your bike bell.

RULE NUMBER 7: OBEY ALL ROAD SIGNS!  If you see a TOP SIGN or a RED SIGNAL LIGHT, you must stop. A GREEN SIGNAL means you can go. BUT FIRST you must follow à

RULE NUMBER 8: LOOK AND LISTEN. Use your eyes and ears to check BEFORE you go.

RULE NUMBER 9: When you’re crossing a street, a crosswalk, driveway, or ANY place a car could be pulling out from, you should ALWAYS STOP and LOOK LEFT, then LOOK RIGHT, then LOOK LEFT AGAIN.  Make sure there isn’t a car coming before you continue biking.

RULE NUMBER 10: BEST RULE – HAVE FUN! And get ready to get on your bikes and RIDE!
