Draw Artemis!
NASA’s Mission to the Moon and Beyond!
Draw NASA’s ARTemis Mission To The Moon And Beyond!
With Mark Kistler
Based on Emmy Award Winning PBS Artist Mark Kistler’s Collaboration with NASA’s Team Artemis production of the LIVE streamed YouTube series “#DrawARTemis LIVE!”. NASA scientists, engineers, astronauts, and artists joined Mark Kistler LIVE for this popular YouTube series.
In this engaging interactive School Assembly, students will learn to draw NASA’s SLS Rocket, the largest rocket ever to lift off of planet earth! The SLS (Space Launch System) Rocket is the world’s most powerful rocket, capable of carrying 4 astronauts and cargo to the Moon and is just one of many complicated systems coordinated to successfully accomplish NASA’s Artemis Missions to the Moon with the first female and the next male astronaut!
Science is integral!
As students learn to draw this super heavy lift rocket, Mark Kistler teaches how integral science is to this Artemis Mission! Mark will discuss the following facts during the assembly:
- The SLS Core Rocket consists of a lower chamber of liquid hydrogen and an upper chamber of liquid oxygen which is at 420 degrees below zero! When the Core ignites it burns at over 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to boil iron!
- Two solid rocket boosters attached to each side, push the SLS to 24,500 mph, 10x the speed of a bullet!
- It only takes 8 minutes for the SLS to burn through more than 3 million pounds of propellant to break free of earths gravity to attain orbit.
- At lift off the SLS rocket has over 8.8 million pounds of thrust, equivalent to THREE HUNDRED 737 jet planes!
NASA Artists:
Learning how to draw NASA’s SLS Rocket is an exciting window into the awe and splendor of human space flight exploration. The NASA Artemis Team consists of a group of talented artists, many of whom are Mark Kistler’s former art students/PBS viewers. These artists visually convey the information data from NASA scientists and engineers for the world to share in the thrilling excitement of this Artemis mission to the MOON!
NASA Career Possibilities:
Over 5,800 people from all 50 states are important team members making Artemis a reality! During this unforgettable school assembly Mark Kistler ties in the inspiring career possibilities of your students becoming NASA Artists, Astronauts, Scientists, and Engineers!
500 years of art history:
Mark Kistler teaches your students how to draw this SLS Rocket using his world famous proven teaching techniques based on the 500 years of historically important “12 Renaissance Words Of Drawing”.

Your students will need to arrive at the assembly 5 minutes before scheduled start time. Each student will need:
8.5 x 11 BLANK WHITE PAPER.
Giant smile and a “Yahooo” positive attitude!
Pencil with an eraser
Hard back book or clip board to use as a lap desk.
Note: We will be emailing you a PDF of an “Official Mark Kistler Dare To Draw School Assembly!” 8.5 x 11 student drawing paper template to print off for all students and staff. This PDF template is a fun sheet that has Mark’s photo, his Pencil power logo, and “The 12 Renaissance words” listed on the side. Mark teaches the importance of these visual art terms during his interactive directed drawing assembly. Printing this PDF is NOT mandatory. This PDF is an option for you to increase the fun learning during this assembly event.
Presentation Area: Brightly lit presentation space.Schools will typically hold this assembly in the gym, cafeteria, assembly hall, or theater. My preference is the theater, however any indoor space that comfortably seats the participating grade levels is fine. For gyms and cafeterias, I prefer students sitting on the floor with paper, pencils and hard cover books as lap desks. Some schools prefer to have cafeteria tables down for students to sit at. This is fine as long as all students arrive with the paper, Pencil and hardback book to use a a lap desk. I request teachers instruct students sitting with backs toward my teaching screen turn toward the front and use their lap desk (book) so that all students are facing the front.
Equipment Requirements:
Required:
2 x 6 foot tables
Working microphone system
Digital Projector (to project my laptop and my document camera)
Large screen or blank wall space to project on
Extension cord and multi-plug power strip
Mark will arrive at least 45-60 minutes prior to Assembly start time to position all the equipment. No need for you or your crew to worry about positioning, just have everything gathered at the front of the room for me. Suggest chairs be positioned along both sides of the event space for teachers to comfortably sit and participate.
If possible(not mandatory):
4 -8 black extendable music stands (used these to display my books and artwork)
2 large portable dry erase boards (to be used on either side of my teaching area and invite a few students and staff to draw along with me ON STAGE!)
Mr Mark will be projecting his drawing lesson on the giant screen behind him for all students to clearly see and engage. Upon request Mr. Mark will record the assemblies and share the iCloud link free of charge for your school for students to enjoy watching over and over and for those who missed this extraordinary event of creativity!
At the conclusion of the assemblies, Mr. Mark will give your school library one of his How—to-Draw books for students to check out and continue their learning to draw journey.
Prepare your students to blast-off to the land of imagination with the power of a pencil!
Students will learn how to draw in 3-D while creating NASA’s Artemis Rocket!
EVERY student participates in this 100% hands-on assembly.
Every student comes prepared with paper, a pencil and a clip board, slate or book to use as a lap desk. This 100% hands-on assembly encourages students of all ages to participate by stretching their imaginations in adding depth and perspective to their drawings.
Students will learn about the SCIENCE and possible career opportunities available in science and at NASA!
Mark believes that learning how to draw in 3D builds crucial thinking skills and nourishes self-esteem. His positive messages on goal setting, dream questing, environmental awareness, and the power of reading have sparked millions of children around the world to discover their individual potentials.

So many staff members and students complimented on Mark’s presentation. Some even said that the virtual format for this was ideal and that he was PERFECT in the role of virtual teaching and interacting with the audience. Many kids are so proud of their work. One child comes to mind who praised himself for his work, which was so nice to hear since he tends to be shy and less confident. Mark is a favorite performance at our of school. He is our most successful LIVE VIRTUAL school assembly, actually the hands down BEST assembly in all of our 7 years (90 assemblies)! He is a “keeper”! Mark has been a guest for the past 4 years for our 5th graders. This year was our first virtual visit, we added the 2nd graders and they were incredibly happy. It is impressive how Mark was able to get all the kids attention even though we were doing the assembly virtually. We will definitely have Mark again next year.

After speaking with several staff members we all agreed that Mark Kistler’s “Dare To Draw!” Virtual was a phenomenal assembly. Time and time again I heard that the students were very much engaged in your drawing, and their excitement was evident. As I walked past the classrooms after the assembly, I saw several teachers having their students put their pictures under the document camera to share with their classmates. Many students were very excited to share their artwork. You affectively shared your joy of drawing! By the way, many teachers, including myself, interacted with the drawing activity as well! We are looking forward to seeing you once again. Your virtual assembly far exceeded our expectations and was much better than other virtual programs we had this year. Definitely a 10!
