What is Social Emotional Learning?
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), SEL is how students and adults understand and manage their emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible choices. It’s a learning process by which students work to develop competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and how to make good decisions.
How can School Assemblies support Social-Emotional Learning?
Remember when your parents would say the same things over and over, but you never listened. Or think about how you’re always trying to tell your kids important lessons and advice. But they don’t want to listen. Then, there’s that moment when you heard the advice from your aunt or your grandmother, or another trusted adult, and it’s the same things with your kids. When they hear important life lessons from good, responsible people that they look up to, all of a sudden, the message resonates.
School Assemblies are the same way. Students engage with and gain a respect for the assembly presenter, and they hear a positive message from a new, interesting, and exciting source. NOW the message comes through.
Further, school assemblies are a shared experience. It’s not something that’s just being done by one teacher or in one classroom. School assemblies are a unifying experience for an entire student body.
When your students hear messages about character education, making good choices, goal-setting, and emotional control coming from a motivational speaker during an assembly show, the message won’t be tuned out and the expectation will be set for the entire school at the same time.
