What is World Kindness Day?

World Kindness Day is an international celebration and holiday that began in 1998. It is meant to promote kindness around the world and is observed annually on November 13 in conjunction with the World Kindness Movement. World Kindness Day is celebrated by many nations, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates. This holiday offers an opportunity for students and schools around the world to reflect on kindness as an important and unifying human value.  On such a day that is devoted to positivity and the potential impacts of small or large acts of kindness, promoting and disseminating this valuable character trait brings people of all backgrounds and nationalities together.

What is the History of World Kindness Day?

The World Kindness Day Movement first introduced World Kindness Day as a day of observation. In 2019, The Movement was officially registered as a non-governmental organization in Sweden, although the origins of the group date back to 1997 at a Tokyo-based conference. A variety of organizations and groups based in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Thailand, and Australia were assembled for their passion and advocacy of kindness in human society. The original association of the World Kindness Movement formed as a result of the conference, writing a declaration of their beginnings pledging to unifying to create a more compassionate and kinder world. To facilitate their mission, they facilitated a launch including the inaugural event of World Kindness Day.

The intent of World Kindness Day was brought about by the World Kindness Movement to facilitate good deeds in communities focusing on a common thread of kindness promoting unity and the positive and powerful impact of compassion.  Since the inception more than 20 years ago, World Kindness Day has received global acknowledgement, with associated celebrations attracting participants from every major continent around the world.  Activities have included concerts, dances, and distributing kindness cards.

Though a semi-unofficial observance as a national holiday, the World Kindness Movement hopes that World Kindness Day will someday receive official recognition across the world. Their goal is that World Kindness Day will become as celebrating and well known as International Human Rights Day, World Health Day, and the International Day of Peace.

Why Should Your School Acknowledge World Kindness Day?

1.    Doing Things for Others Is Actually Fun

Many families are focused on their own lives and can forget to take a moment to think about what other people in their community are lacking and what others might need. Ironically, doing something nice for others isn’t only good for your school community - it can be good for your students and staff, too!

2.    It Offers an Excuse to Get Creative in Your Kindness

Many other holidays and days of celebration encourage students to take their appreciation of things to the max. Whereas, World Kindness Day allows for a chance to think of extra-special or unique ways to perform acts of kindness, whether they are large or small.

3.    Kindness is an Important SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Character Trait

Celebrating kindness and the benefits derived from this value of the human condition is important. It reminds us that we are not alone in our lives and that do we live in a world where goodness is apparent. And that your students have the power to make a positive impact on others.
